Introduction to the Basics of DTF Printers

1.Basic Definition

DTF (Direct to Film) printer is a digital printing device used for textile printing. Its full name is Direct Transfer to Film Printer. The core principle is to first print the pattern on a transfer film, and then transfer the pattern onto various fabrics (such as cotton, polyester, blends, etc.) through high-temperature heat pressing to achieve personalized customized printing.

 

2.Working Principle and Process

Printing Section

Use the dedicated DTF ink to print the pattern on the PET transfer film. After the ink dries, a sticky pattern layer is formed.

Some equipment requires printing a white ink base first to enhance the contrast of the pattern on dark fabrics.

Powder application step

After the printing is completed, evenly sprinkle heat transfer powder (usually polyurethane particles) on the surface of the pattern. The powder adheres to the ink, forming a strong transfer layer.

Pressing and transfer process

Cover the fabric with the film, and using the heat transfer machine, under high temperature (about 150-180℃) and pressure, the pattern and the powder melt and adhere to the surface of the fabric. Finally, remove the film to complete the transfer.

5.Limitations

Equipment and consumables cost: The initial investment in equipment is relatively high (ranging from tens of thousands to hundreds of thousands of yuan), and special inks, films, and transfer powders are required. The long-term usage cost needs to be comprehensively evaluated.

Complexity of process: Compared to direct printing (DTG) technology, additional steps of powder spreading and heat pressing are needed, making the process slightly more cumbersome.

Impact on breathability: Large-area patterns may affect the breathability of the fabric. They are more suitable for decorative printing rather than being used extensively on close-fitting clothing.
